Being a genuine believer seems to be tricky today. We Christians are not being ordered to blend into the world's darkness, but we are asked to be light.

But what do we witness in this era? As it is affirmed that, "You are the light of the world. A city set on a hill cannot be hidden".

In a world all too often filled with confusion and chaos, our lives are to reveal the hope, truth, and love of Christ. To be light in dark places is to enter brokenness with mercy, and to live with integrity when compromise is most desirable.

When we walk in the light of Christ, we are lights that will lead people to Him. As we are building our relationship with Christ, let's just briefly discuss the reason why we are instructed to be light in dark places but not in ease.

To reflect Christ's character

Jesus instructs Christians to be light in dark places because we ought to reflect His character to a world that requires truth, hope, and love. As Light of the World, Jesus shines in the darkness of chaos and confusion and invites His disciples to shine likewise.

When we follow Him and live by His Word, and stand for righteousness in a broken world, we become tangible manifestations of His presence. Our light is not self-sustaining; it comes from our walk with Christ, shining the way for others to discover Him.

In a society frequently characterized by fear, injustice, and spiritual blindness, Christians are to be bold, shining witnesses living proof that God's love still breaks through the darkest of places.

He proclaimed it

Being in the dark corners was what Jesus invited us to do as believers, since He Himself specified and commanded it as part of our purpose and identity. As Matthew 5:14-16 records, He says, "You are the light of the world," sending His followers out to shine outward and intentionally in a world shrouded in sin and confusion.

This is not only a symbolic declaration but rather it's a divine order to reflect His righteousness, love, and truth in the midst of darkness. Living out His commands, extending mercy, and standing up for justice, we illuminate the path for others to encounter God.

We are not the source of our light; it comes from Christ, the True Light, and through us, His spirit penetrates the broken places of the earth.

To Glorify God Through Good Works

Jesus calls Christians to be light in the darkness so that through our good works, God would be glorified. As Matthew 5:16 said, He commands us to speak, "Let your light shine before others, that they may see your good deeds and glorify your Father in heaven".

This indicates to us that our external acts of kindness, justice, and compassion aren't meant to make us seem good, but to drive people to God. When we serve humbly, love sacrificially, and live with integrity, we illustrate the character of Christ and signal others to His presence.

Where the world is so frequently marked by selfishness and desperation, our good works glow like a beacon of God's grace, compelling hearts toward worship and transformation. To be light is not just to do good; it's to share the goodness of God in everything we do.

To be different in a dark world

Jesus invites us, as Christians, to be light in the darkness so that we may be different in a sin-dominant, uncertain, and religiously blind world. As was written in Matthew 5:14, Jesus says, "You are the light of the world.

A city set on a hill cannot be hidden," emphasizing that our Christianity must be seen and obvious. As believers in Christ, we are called to live differently so that we may display His truth, His love, and His holiness in ways that clearly contrast the world's brokenness.

We are not called to be better; we are called to be clear. As stars shine brightest against a darkening evening sky, our lives are called to light the path to God, giving hope, direction, and conviction to those who still seek. Being different is not a result of faith but rather a purpose.

Speaking life and truth

Jesus calls Christians to be light in dark places so that we can speak light and truth into the darkness that conceal the world in deception, confusion, and spiritual blindness. As Christians, we are caretakers of His Word that has the power of His Spirit to endure and lovingly declare it.

As testified in John 8:12, Jesus declares, "I am the light of the world," and by abiding in His light, we become tools whereby His truth is reflected. Speaking light is to bring hope where there is hopelessness, understanding where there is confusion, and righteousness where there is compromise.

Our words, grounded in Scripture and grace, are powerful to expose darkness and lead others to healing, freedom, and salvation. The calling is not just what we say but being a voice of truth in a world that is hungry for it.

To love radically

Jesus calls Christians to be light in dark places so that we might love radically, as He did. In a world all too often described as selfishness and hatred, radical love is a counter-cultural witness to the heart of God.

Jesus charged us to love not just our neighbors but even our enemies, showing that real discipleship is compassion that defies cultural and personal convenience. This love is forgiving, sacrificial, and inclusive. It bridges divides and heals where there is pain.

When we elaborate love, we shine Christ's light, His grace, and call others to Him. We are a light in darkness, shining a path to the One who first loved us and calls us to do the same.

To draw hope in the midst of despair

Christians are ordered by Jesus to be light in darkness that we may impart hope in the world full of chaos, the comfort and assurance that are available in Him. Jesus says, "I am the light of the world," promising that whoever believes in Him shall never fall because they will possess the light of life.

This light is not only spiritual, it's calming troubled hearts. When Christians step into shattered situations with compassion, words of encouragement, and a message of truth, they are lights of hope, reminding others that God is near.

Our presence, words, and prayers can be like dawn in someone's midnight, leading them to Christ's restoration and healing.

To serve compassionately

Jesus calls Christians to be light in the darkness where we may serve in compassion, reflecting His own heart for the hurting, broken, and ignored. Throughout His ministry, Jesus consistently demonstrated servant-hearted love, healing the sick, feeding the poor, and washing the feet of His disciples as a model of humility and concern.

In an indifferent world, such loving service is a powerful demonstration of the love of God. When we serve others in compassion, generosity, and kindness, we shine His light in the broken areas of need and pain and introduce hope and dignity where there has been loss.

It is not a decision but rather a call that demonstrates Christ in our actions and invites others to experience His love up close.

Dear, let's keep striving as we build our relationship with God. May the good Lord's grace be upon us.
