The Blessings of God
God’s blessing are the good things he does for us, whether in our spiritual life and circumstances. Blessing is the gift of God’s grace. God blesses so that we will be his hand of blessing to others. Blessings hold great significance in many cultures and religions. They are often seen as a way to invoke divine favor, protection, and guidance. The blessing of God shares a lot of benefit in our life, and we shall discuss some of them in this article.
According to the scripture, we have eight types of blessing that Jesus Christ shares with his people.
- Blessed are the poor in spirit, for their is the kingdom of God.
To be poor in spirit means recognizing that everything good in our nature comes from God.
Anything worthy of praise in us comes from God and God alone. Being poor in spirit also means to acknowledge our deepest human need for God and to grow in that longing and that dependence on a daily basis. As Christians, it is the need for us to be poor in spirit because the magnificent blessings of the kingdom of God are open and available only to poor to people.
- Blessed are those who mourn, for they will be comforted.
Those who mourn, by definition, are not happy. Jesus wants his followers to understand that those who experience mourning are not hopeless. Mourning is a process that teaches us how to fully surrender our pain to God so that he can heal our hearts. God comforts us in our own mourning here on earth as he knows its pain intimately.
- Blessed are the meek, for they will inherit the earth.
To be meek is to be gentle. Meekness is essentially an attitude of heart whereby a person is willing to accept and submit without resistance to the will and desire of someone else. Meekness tames the temper, subdues the self, calms the passions, and brings order out of chaos in the soul.
- Blessed are they which do hunger and thirst after righteousness: for they shall be filled.
To hunger and thirst for righteousness, means we should urgently pursue righteousness. Obeying God can be translated to seeking God’s righteousness. The one who obeys God is blessed because God will fill him with righteousness and plenty of other good things. The hunger for the righteous lead us to uproot our sin by the power of the holy spirit and become more like Jesus.
- Blessed are the merciful: for they shall obtain mercy.
God shows his mercy for those who are suffering through healing, comfort, the alleviation of suffering and caring about those in distress. Showing mercy brings happiness. The scripture teaches over and over that the more merciful I am, the happier I am going to be. The scriptures say, “whoever despises his neighbor is a sinner, but blessed is he who is generous to the poor”. Being kind to other people actually blesses you and makes you happier in life.
- Blessed are the pure in heart: for they shall see God.
Purity of the heart means being made clean through the spirit and the word. Having a pure heart starts with confession and repentance but extends to an ongoing devotion to God. A pure heart is a heart that can be used by God not because of our own perfection, but because we are willing to learn, be corrected, repent, and change. A pure heart empowers us to live a life of love. When we are pure in heart, we are able to love as God loves. Being pure at heart makes us feel confident for the feeling of not doing misdeeds against anyone.
- Blessed are the peacemakers, for they will be called children of God.
Peacemaker is someone who brings peace, they possess a profound understanding of the power of dialogue, empathy and reconciliation. The peacemakers are called children of God because of their eternal reward in following Jesus. The peacemaker initiates reconciliation when others have wronged them. Being a peace make, relieves our anxieties, gives us a grateful heart, answers our request and bestows his peace on us. In our daily life, as we learn to be peacemakers, we can guard our family from destructive conflict, deepen our love and intimacy with our spouse, and provide our children with a solid foundation for life.
- Blessed are they that suffer persecution for justice’s sake, for there is the kingdom of heaven.
Persecution is painful emotionally, psychologically, and in some instances, even physically. The people who are really happy are the people who have been persecuted for the sake of righteousness. The scripture reminds us, blessed are you when people hate you and when they exclude you and revile you and spurn your names as evil, on account of the son of man. Persecution draws us closer to God, and builds our confidence in God, because we know without a doubt, that he will deliver us.
