In today’s world, where many are guided by feelings, trends, and personal ambition, God calls His children to a higher standard, to live by the holy spirit. The holy spirit is our comforter, teacher, and guide.
Living by the holy spirit means allowing Him to be our guide in every area of life, in our thoughts, our words, our decisions, and our relationships. Beloved, when we live by the holy spirit, we are no longer driven by the flesh or worldly desires, but we walk in step with God’s will.
Today, let’s open our hearts to understand what it really means to live by the holy spirit, and how doing so can lead to a deeper, more meaningful life with God. Beloved, as we call ourselves Christians, it is our responsibility to exhibit the following points discussed below.
Surrender to the holy spirit:
Living by the holy spirit commences with full surrender to God’s will. Surrender to the holy spirit means allowing God’s Spirit to guide, empower, and control your life instead of relying solely on your own will and strength.
As it is written in the letter of Paul to the Romans 8:14, "for all who are led by the Spirit of God are sons of God".
Developing intimacy through prayer and the word:
Developing intimacy with God through prayer and the word means fostering a close, personal relationship with Him through both actively communicating with Him in prayer and studying His teachings in the bible. The holy spirit speaks through God’s word and quiet moments in prayer.
The more time we spend with Him, the more we recognize His voice and direction. As it is written in John 14:26, "but the helper, the holy spirit, whom the Father will send in my name, he will teach you all things and bring to your remembrance all that I have said to you".
Walking in obedience:
Walking in obedience is a way to cultivate a deeper relationship with God and allow His Holy Spirit to guide and empower our lives. It also means aligning our thoughts, words, and actions with God’s will, as revealed in the bible or through our own understanding of His character and guidance.
Though the holy spirit will guide, we must choose to obey. As it is written in Acts 8:29, "and the spirit said to Philip, Go over and join this chariot".
Displaying the fruit of the Spirit:
The fruit of the Spirit is not something that people force or strive for, but rather a natural expression of their relationship with God. Displaying the fruit of the Spirit means outwardly manifesting the virtues and character traits produced by the holy spirit in believers’ lives.
Beloved, a spirit-led life is known by the fruit it bears, as it was written in Galatians 5:22-23, "but the fruit of the spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, self-control. Against such things there is no law".
Resisting the flesh:
Resisting the flesh means an ongoing battle against sinful desires and inclinations that are inherent in human nature. It is not about denying the physical body itself, but rather our fallen, unredeemed nature, which is prone to sin and rebellion against God’s will.
Resisting the flesh and its desires is essential for living by the holy spirit. When believers actively choose to deny and resist the temptations and desires of the flesh, they create space for the holy spirit to work in their lives, leading to a life that is more pleasing to God.
Beloved, we must intentionally crucify the old self daily and choose the spirit’s way.
As it is written in Galatians 5:16-17, "but I say, walk by the Spirit, and you will not gratify the desires of the flesh. For the desires of the flesh are against the spirit, and the desires of the spirit are against the flesh, for these are opposed to each other, to keep you from doing the things you want to do".
Being spirit-filled, not just spirit-indwelt:
Being filled by the Spirit means living a life influenced by God’s presence and power, leading to a transformation that shapes one’s thoughts, actions, and emotions. It's about living under His influence rather than just having His presence.
As it is written in Ephesians 5:18, "and do not get drunk with wine, for that is debauchery, but be filled with the spirit".
Listening to the spirit’s prompting:
Listening to the spirit prompting means recognizing and responding to the guidance of the holy spirit in one’s daily life. It's about being attentive to the subtle ways God communicates His will and direction.
Many times, the promptings of the spirit come to us in ways we do not think of. The lord gives us promptings to help us and bless others. As it is written in Psalm 81:13-14, "if we want to be led and controlled by the holy spirit, we must obey the Holy Spirit's prompting".
Depending on the spirit power:
Dependence includes trusting, obeying, being led by him, and embracing his ministry. Beloved, the Christian life is not meant to be lived by human effort.
As it is written in Acts 1:8, "but you will receive power when the holy spirit has come upon you, and you will be my witnesses in Jerusalem and in all Judea and Samaria, and to the end of the earth".
Guiding against grieving the holy spirit:
Guiding against grieving the holy spirit means acting in ways that are pleasing to and align with the holy spirit guidance, rather than causing him sorrow or displeasure. Beloved, we must strive to keep our hearts clean and open to His work.
As it is written in Ephesians 4:30, "And do not grieve the Holy Spirit of God, by whom you were sealed for the day of redemption".
Living by the Holy Spirit is the key to a life of purpose, peace, and spiritual growth. As believers, we are called to walk in obedience, allowing the Spirit to guide our thoughts, actions, and decisions.
When we submit to His direction, we experience the fullness of God’s love and the power to overcome life’s challenges.
May we continually seek His presence, rely on His wisdom, and reflect His grace in all we do, trusting that He will lead us on the path of righteousness.
