Defending your Faith as a Christian
Defending your faith as a Christian is about standing firm in your beliefs while engaging with others in a respectful and thoughtful manner. It involves understanding the foundations of Christianity, responding to questions and challenges, and sharing your faith with confidence.
Beloved, each day our culture seems to grow more opposed to Christianity. And as such we should be prepared to make a defense of the hope we have in our savior (Jesus Christ). We have a lot for you, but this message will cover “why we should defend our faith as Christians in Christ Jesus”.
The following are some of the reasons why we should defend our faith no matter the challenges.
Biblical command
A biblical command is one of the key reasons Christians should defend their faith. Scripture explicitly instructs believers to be prepared to give a defense for their hope in Christ.
A biblical command refers to directives given by God, Jesus Christ, or appointed leaders that believers are expected to follow. These commands serve as expressions of God's will and character, guiding Christians in their faith and daily lives.
In the New Testament, Jesus emphasized the heart of the law, summarizing it with two great commandments: Love the Lord your God with all your heart, soul, and mind, and love your Neighbours as yourself.
As it is written in Jude 1:3(Beloved, although I was very eager to write to you about our common salvation, I found it necessary to write appealing to you to contend for the faith that was once for all delivered to the saints).
Strengthen personal faith
Strengthening personal faith is a crucial reason why Christians should defend their belief. Defending the faith encourages study, reflection, and prayer, which solidify one's relationship with God.
It also builds confidence, helping Christians remain steadfast in their convictions despite challenges or opposition. Beloved, when we are actively defending our faith, believers not only strengthen their own trust in God but also inspire others to seek truth and grow in their spiritual journey.
As it is written in 1 Corinthians 16:13(Be on your guard; stand firm in the faith; be courageous; be strong).
Protects against false teachings
Defending the Christian faith helps safeguard believers from false teachings that can distort biblical truth. The Bible warns believers about deceptive doctrines that can lead people away from the truth.
By defending the faith, believers safeguard themselves and others from deception, ensuring that the gospel remains pure and unaltered. As it was written in 1 John 4:1(Beloved, do not believe every spirit, but test the spirits to see whether they are from God, because many false prophets have gone out into the world).
Effective Evangelism
Effective evangelism is a key reason Christians should always be ready to defend their faith. Sharing the gospel often involves addressing doubts, misconceptions, or objections from non-believers.
When Christians can clearly explain and defend their beliefs, they can present the message of Christ more persuasively, removing barriers that might prevent someone from embracing the faith.
Additionally, defending the faith allows Christians to engage in thoughtful discussions that encourage deeper understanding and reflection. Jesus and His apostles often defended their teachings, making apologetics an important aspect of evangelism.
As it was written in 1 Peter 3:15(Dear friends, although I was very eager to write to you about the salvation we share, I felt compelled to write and urge you to contend for the faith that was once for all entrusted to God’s holy people).
Builds Confidence
Building confidence is one of the important reasons Christians should defend their faith. When believers actively engage in defending their beliefs, they grow stronger in their understanding of scripture and develop assurance in their convictions.
This confidence is not just intellectual but spiritual, as believers grow in trust that God’s Word is reliable and unshakable. The more Christians practice defending their faith, the more they develop boldness in sharing the gospel, standing firm in their beliefs, and responding to challenges with wisdom and grace.
As it is written in Philippians 4:13(I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me).
Prepare for prosecution
Preparing for persecution is one of the reasons Christians should defend their faith. The Bible warns believers that they will face opposition for their beliefs, and being equipped to defend their faith helps them stand firm in difficult times.
Defending the faith strengthens believers, helping them remain steadfast and courageous when facing trials. By standing firm in their beliefs, Christians can inspire and encourage others in their spiritual journey.
As it is written in 1 Peter 3:15(But in your hearts revere Christ as Lord. Always be prepared to give an answer to everyone who asks you to give the reason for the hope that you have. But do this with gentleness and respect).
Defends God’s glory
Defending God's glory is an important reason Christians defend their faith. Many believers see it as their duty to uphold God's truth and honor His name when faced with challenges or misconceptions.
Throughout history, misleading doctrines have threatened to distort biblical truth. By standing firm in their beliefs and studying scripture, Christians help safeguard the integrity of their faith community.
As it was written in 2 Peter 2:1(But false prophets also arose among the people, just as there will be false teachers among you, who will secretly bring in destructive heresies).
Encouraging other believers
Encouraging other believers plays a vital role in helping Christians defend their faith. When believers support and uplift one another, they strengthen their confidence in God's truth and become more prepared to face challenges.
Encouragement fosters unity, builds resilience, and equips Christians to stand firm in their beliefs. As it is written in Hebrews 10:24-25(And let us consider how we may spur one another on toward
love and good deeds, not giving up meeting together, as some are in the habit of doing, but encouraging one another and all the more as you see the Day approaching).
Demonstrate love and truth
Demonstrating love and truth is a powerful way for Christians to defend their faith. When believers engage with others in a spirit of love and honesty, they reflect Christ’s teachings and make their message more compelling.
In a world where beliefs and values constantly shift, staying rooted in biblical truth helps believers navigate challenges without compromising their faith. As it is written in Romans 12:2(Do not conform to the pattern of this world but be transformed by the renewing of your mind.
Then you will be able to test and approve what God’s will is his good, pleasing and perfect will).
Beloved, as the coming of the good lord is approaching, let's all encourage one another to stand firm.
May the blessings from the good Lord dwells with us.
